Getting to La Fortuna
From San José (3 hours)
The standard route is Highway 27 west to Ciudad Quesada, then north to La Fortuna. The road is fully paved and easy to drive. Shared shuttle services run daily from San José for around $25–35 per person and are comfortable for most budgets.
From Monteverde (2.5 hours)
The famous "jeep-boat-jeep" transfer crosses Lake Arenal by boat — one of the most scenic journeys in Costa Rica. It costs around $35 and takes 2.5 hours vs. 4+ hours by road. Worth every cent.
From Liberia Airport (2 hours)
Guanacaste visitors should head southeast on Highway 1, then cut inland through Cañas toward La Fortuna. Private transfers are efficient if you're arriving with a group.
Insider Tips
- Book morning activities. La Fortuna clouds over reliably by noon — if you want Arenal volcano views, be on the trail or the zip line before 10am.
- Skip the Tabacón hot springs resort. Expensive and crowded. Local guides know free and low-cost hot spring access points along the Tabacón River.
- Waterfall timing matters. The La Fortuna waterfall is most dramatic from June–August when the Fortuna River is at peak volume. In dry season it's still beautiful but smaller.
- Layer up at night. Elevation means cooler evenings — bring a light fleece even if you're coming from the beach.
- Book rafting 48 hours ahead. Most Balsa River operators run small groups (8–12 people) and fill up quickly in high season.
